So, this past weekend was Joel's weekend with the boys
and I get an email from my SISTER that is a forwarded email to her (and my brother) from Joel..... and the subject says, "what do ya think?" and then I see my beautiful curly haired oldest son...

I imagine I'd be livid, but I wouldn't let the children know. Has your son mentioned wanting a haircut like that?
In my opinion, Joel should have consulted you, at the very least.
Fortunately your son won't have his school pictures taken for a couple of months...
