The clouds have lifted and the sun is brightly shining. My head is clearing as well, and my eyes are beginning to see the beauty of the light. Promise. Hope. Happiness.

Getting to know me some more

(kindly stolen from Jules -- who stole is from Sheri -- who probably stole it too....bunch of Kleptomaniacs we all are....) I thought the questions were good (too).

1. Explain what ended your last relationship? The relationship I was in before Joel was with a guy that I dated for about a year and a half in highschool and briefly my first semester in college. He was a very nice guy with anger issues (how often do you hear that combo?) He was from a broken family (to say the least) and had very little gumption to do much with his life (to say the most). It was definitely not a relationship I ever thought would last forever. I went away to college and we grew further apart. Last I heard from him, he was an addict. Sad.

2. When was the last time you shaved? Depends what we are taking about -- shaved it all on Friday....my armpits yesterday.

3. What were you doing this morning at 8 a.m.? We are OUT the door at 8 to get Dane to school on time.

4. What were you doing 15 minutes ago? Reading Jule's blog and stealing this questionnaire for my own use.

5. Are you any good at math? I would generally say no.....although I just took the NET (Nursing Entrance Test) and scored better than 98% of the people!

6. Your prom night? Went to a couple....the most memorable was when I called my dad to come and pick me up after a big fight with the boyfriend from above...he took us both home. I love my dad!

7. Do you have any famous ancestors? My dad claims that Davy Crockett is our ancestor...I've yet to do enough research to back that claim....

8. Have you had to take a loan out for school? Yes, but they are paid for now -- and hopefully I won't have to for nursing school...so far, so good.

9. Do you know the words to the song on your myspace profile? Um, duh! I put the song on there. I change it often though. Right now it's High School Never Ends, by Bowling for Soup. Love that song!

10. Last thing received in the mail? Crap....a couple magazines....some motorcycle one and Maxum for Joel....

11. How many different beverages have you had today? Water and a Coke

12. Do you ever leave messages on peoples answering machines? Yes. That's why they're there.

13. Who did you lose your CONCERT virginity to? The Styx, I think.....but I am so far removed from concert virginity, I'm not sure if maybe Air Supply came first. I am a concert junkie...nothing better than live music.

14. Do you draw your name in the sand when you go to the beach? Sometimes....but always the boy's names.

15. What was the most painful dental procedure you have had? I haven't really had any painful dental things...I guess wisdom teeth -- but I was completely out -- it did hurt later though.

16. What is out your back door? Back patio with my dog Scout laying there...and my back yard.

17. Any plans for Friday night? BUNCO at my house....and out after.

18. Do you like what the ocean does to your hair? I love the ocean....so sure

19. Have you ever received one of those big tins of 3 different popcorns? um, hello...I worked at Yummies....I got one of those tins every year....NOTHING is better than cheddar popcorn in cream cheese -- don't knock it until you try it.

20. Have you ever been to a planetarium? Yes, went to some planetarium to watch a laser show to Pink Floyd music...wait...that WAS a planetarium wasn't it?

21. Do you re-use towels after you shower? Yes, we change them out weekly, or before if they stink.

22. Some things you are excited about? Date night tonight....and my new ring...

23. What is your favorite flavor of JELLO? Not really a huge fan..........any of it is okay, I guess, if it has enough vodka in it or I guess, if I have the stomach flu.

24. Describe your keychain(s)? It's a little star with a littler (hey it's a word for today) picture of my boys.

25. This question is MIA. So, let's take a quote from Even Cowgirls Get the Blues... "Life is hard if you think it is."

26. Where do you keep your change? In Joel's bedside drawer

27. What kind of winter coat do you own? Can't say I really have one -- I guess I have some barn jackets from WI....but usually if I need anything it's just a sweatshirt jacket dealio.

28. What was the weather like on your graduation day? High school was HOT -- in June in Arizona....but I don't remember the weather.... College...um, I'm guessing HOT too since it was May in Arizona....but I don't remember that weather either. LOL

29. Do you sleep with the door to your room open or closed? Open....need to be able to hear the boys if need be

30. Did U read this far? I hope you did! Now you are tagged! Steal this from me.

Thinking about death...

I sometimes feel like I am obsessed with it....I think about losing my loved ones often. I read the obituaries daily. I have an updated "before I die, I wanna...." list. I'm an ambulance chaser -- I am the gawker at accidents. I find it fascinating to work on the cadavers in school -- always wanting to know how they died. Beyond the obligatory thing that comes along with being a parent (living and deceased wills -- where our children will go -- life insurance -- organ donor information) I've actually discussed my funeral with some of my loved ones....I want everyone who ever knew me to come and celebrate my life...the music...people talking....and the tears....Lord, there better be a lot of tears. :-)

I do think that it is just part of my personality. I love...and I love hard. It explains a lot about me. Part of loving so deeply often is losing -- and hurting. It's one of those strange dichotomies in life. To love is to hurt and also to rejoice. Ok, so I get it.

I've had several death experiences in my life -- an uncle, an aunt, all of my grandparents, most of Joel's. There were several people who died in high school too....none that rocked me as much as my friend Aaron's though.

Example

Aaron was new to AHS -- he was a year older than I was. He sat in front of me in Speech and Debate and we became fast friends. We would talk for HOURS on the phone. He had a hard life. He was only 16, yet he had already been in rehab and was clean and sober. He was so good to me and for me. He helped open my eyes to some toxic relationships and just truly made me feel like a better person for having him as my friend. We did fun things together-- things kids in high school should be doing, like bowling, miniature golf, movies, and hiking the mountain.

That damn mountain.

We had all decided to go hiking one day. My parents were out of town and my ex boyfriend had come over. When Aaron and Mike came over to pick me up (and show me his new haircut), I told them I just couldn't go. With a quick peck on the cheek and an "I'll call you later" ...he was gone.

I never saw him again.

It's been 15 and a half years.....and I still think about him. I still wish him a happy birthday (that just passed) and wonder about him on the day of his death (which ironically -- or not -- is also the same date that Joel and I started dating in 1994) I wonder about his family -- his parents, especially his mom who was so great to me. I wonder about his little brother and sister. Does she even really remember him? I admit to going to the cemetery still...whenever I get the chance. I don't know what I like so much about the cemetery... It's quiet. I'm not judged. I pray. I read his headstone....and tell him about my life. My husband, my kids. I thank him for keeping us safe and I ask him (as if he were some divine power) to help me make the right (albeit difficult) decisions. He still does that for me.

weird? Perhaps.

But to know me is to love me....

Now this is interesting.....tell me what you are!?

Makes sense to me -- since I was born in Nebraska, lived in AZ all my life other then a few years in the beginning and a few years in Wisconsin....

cool.

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The West

Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta.

Friendly and down to earth, you want to enjoy Europe without snobbery or pretensions.
You're the perfect person to go wild on a pub crawl... or enjoy a quiet bike ride through the old part of town.

Did you vote?

Heading in today to do my duty as an American.....Hope Cole thinks it's as meaningful as I do...

Dr. Mr. President -- Song sung by PINK

Dear Mr. President
Come take a walk with me
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep
What do you feel when you look in the mirror
Are you proud

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why

Dear Mr. President
Were you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
How can you say
No child is left behind
We're not dumb and we're not blind
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye

Let me tell you bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh

How do you sleep at night
How do you walk with your head held high
Dear Mr. President
You'd never take a walk with me
Would you

Beautiful Friend....

Don't go.

Ok, maybe that is a bit dramatic.

Have you ever met someone and just clicked? It doesn't happen very often for me. As you can read in a previous post of mine, most of my friends are very old time friends. The kind that literally can remind me who I loved in 2nd grade, what I wore in my 6th grade school picture and can tell me where and when I lost my virginity. I love those friends. Because of those relationships though, I think I have trouble seeing potential for a lasting friendship with someone that I just met. I am very social. I meet people easily and can talk to just about anyone in any situation, but generally it is all surface stuff...or stuff about them and not really anything about me.

So it really took me by surprise when I met Heather We knew each other only on paper. She is part of an online community that I joined after I miscarried in 1999 and she had a son that passed away shortly after birth in 2000. I am not really sure when I started really paying extra attention to her posts...I think it was only in the last couple years. She is really funny. She writes very well and I love her parenting style. She is also from Ireland, so I love to hear about her times there and see pictures of her homeland.

Then one night, a few of us from Arizona decided to meet another friend from our board that was in town. We all met out at dinner...and it...........just...........clicked. She is not just funny -- but the kind of funny that is absolutely side achingly hilarious. She is sassy and sarcastic. It also helps that she likes to drink as much as I do. LOL There is something very special about someone who can jump into any situation and get along just fine. She has since met all of my friends and they all love her. She has joined our bunco group and comes to our girls weekends. She'll watch my kids in a pinch, and let me cry on her shoulder when I'm at my wits end. She's the kind of friend that you trust instantly (and she knows things that some of my nearest and dearest don't) and she gives advice that just makes sense.

We were destined to meet. We were meant to be friends. There are too many coincidences and parallels in our lives to think that our meeting was anything but cosmic.

And now....She's moving. Her husband is going to be taking a job in Hawaii....My little Irish Leprechan Friend is going to be leaving. Ugh. It makes me sad, NOT because I think we will lose our friendship, but it makes me sad that I took our proximity for granted -- maybe took her for granted.

I just can't wrap my arms around the idea of it.
